Training Leaders To Make A World of Difference.
|
Introduction The goal of the Music Ministry internship is to give students an opportunity to SEE A CHURCH MUSIC MINISTRY IN ACTION. This experience is meant to give them a clearer perspective of working with people and doing the administrative/organizational tasks associated with running a music ministry. We want the students to learn as much as they can from people who are in this ministry through discussions, watching what they do, and helping out in whatever capacity they are asked to. This is a mentoring opportunity for the student. We believe that PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE ALONGSIDE TRAINING will help students be more successful in leading music ministries.
The student will be assigned to a supervisor at a local church and will give approximately 90 HOURS OF SERVICE over their 2nd year (September - April) of the Associate of Arts in Music Ministry program. The intern position would ideally include a variety of music ministry aspects and an increase in responsibility as the intern grows in their role, competency, and supervisor’s trust (i.e. setting-up, pulling and filing music, “PowerPoint”, singing or playing on worship team, leading or co-leading worship, etc.). The internship is a requirement for graduation.
In order to keep a clear focus and to help make this a meaningful experience we have created this journal/diary booklet for the student. This booklet contains a list of DISCUSSION TOPICS AND ACTIVITIES that students need to cover. It also contains pages for journal entries and lists of activities experienced.
Lists of activities to learn and experience:
A) Administration/Organization: — scheduling worship leaders & teams; contacting people (why when and how they put certain people on the schedule); CCLI administration; Budgeting; Finding music; Arranging music; Powerpoint; Pulling, filing and organizing music; Running rehearsals
B) Relationships and team building: — Working with senior pastors i.e. working within given themes, working on the order of service, length of worship time, understanding the church’s vision of worship; Leading artists – building a team and keeping good relationships; Working with sound/audio people
C) Organizing special events: — Any one or more of the following: Christmas, Easter, Baptism services, Intergenerational services, Conferences, Celebration services. Concerts of prayer and worship, Musical/drama presentations, CD recordings, Outreach services, Music Concerts etc.
The students can be used musically (i.e. worship leading, worship musicians) at the discretion of the Music Ministry leader. This internship is meant to emphasize the “behind the scenes” organization more than the musical abilities.
List of Discussion Topics:
1. How do you handle “artistic temperaments” in your artists?
2. What have you found to be the hardest part about this job?
3. How do you deal with criticism? How do you respond?
4. What is your vision for worship and how does that fit with your senior pastor’s?
5. How do you help your artists to put being a servant above stardom? What would you do if someone’s ego was getting in the way of being a servant?
6. What kinds of things do you do to build team unity?
7. How do you handle relational conflict between team members?
7. Do you regularly encourage your team and if so, how do you do it?
8. How do you motivate your volunteers (musicians, sound technicians, support people)?
9. How do you add to your team? (i.e. Do you hold auditions, how do you choose people, what is your criteria?)
10. What do you do if someone wants to be on a worship team but they don’t meet the criteria?
11. Explain your (or the church’s) philosophy on excellence versus participation? on excellence vs. perfectionism?
12. What do you do to develop new musicians? (those in training)
13. Have you ever had to deal with jealousy and envy between team members? What did you do?
14. Have you ever had to deal with competition between musicians? What did you do?
15. Do you have a policy of conduct for team members? If so, what is it and why do you have one?
16. How do you balance being an artist (being creative and expressing yourself musically) and being an overseer (doing all the administrative duties)? Do you still get time to be creative and practice your instrument? Is it a struggle for you? Which part do you find hardest?
17. What abilities (training) have helped you the most in your leadership role?
18. What do you do to help yourself stay spiritually fresh?
19. What do you do to help yourself stay musically fresh?
20. What role do you think musical worship should have in the church?
21. What criteria do you use in choosing new songs for your congregation?
22. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Each time the student is involved with their sponsoring church they are to write about the various topics covered, what they've learned, what they've observed and experienced. Under the activities section they write down what they did at the church. Each student will have a college faculty member assigned to them and this person will keep in touch with the church supervisor about once a month via email or phone to check for any concerns. The booklet needs to be shown to the student's faculty advisor at the end of each month.
At the end of each semester the supervisor will sign the booklet and submit an assessment/evaluation of the student’s internship based on attitude, dependability, work ethic, competence etc. Students are expected to behave in a manner becoming of servant Christian leaders, submitting to local church leadership, traditions, and ethical standards. Students should be willing to serve in whatever capacity needed and do so with enthusiasm, punctuality, humility, integrity and excellence. Students are to attend their host church’s weekend service (more than 3 absences may result in a fail).
The student will turn in the book to their advisor to sign and then they will receive it back for future reference.
Becoming A Host Church Churches desiring to become a host can contact Darlene Ketchum, IMM Director. We will be happy to set up a meeting to discuss the possibility of internship.
