CE140 Evangelism and Discipleship Strategies for Youth
Ministry (2)
This course covers a historical perspective on evangelism and discipleship
while helping students learn how to develop youth into discoverers rather
than creators of truth. Students will be introduced to many helpful tools,
strategies, and resources that are available.
CE141 Philosophy of Youth Ministry (2)
A study of the rationale behind
youth ministry, how youth ministry is implemented and an evaluation of its
effectiveness in achieving intended goals.
CE142 Adolescent Development & Family Systems(3)
An introduction to the developmental issues of adolescents (biological,
cognitive, gender, self, family relationships, friends, dating/
love/sexuality, school, work, media, etc.) and the role of family in the
developmental process.
CE144 Using Technology in Youth Ministry (2)
Starting with a biblical theology and philosophy of using technology,
students are introduced to using the various technologies available to aid
in youth ministry (i.e. presentation software and hardware, video, graphic
design; and the internet).
CE143 Planning & Programming for Youth
Ministry (3)
Building upon CE 141, this course
explores the specifics of building a youth ministry program aimed at
achieving goals. This includes working with a budget, juggling schedules,
promoting events, preparing, training volunteers, delegating workload, and
evaluating effectiveness.
CE231 Children's Ministry (2)
This is a study of the art of
reaching and teaching children including analysis of the various age groups
and the different approaches and teaching techniques for each.
CE241 Youth Leader Development (2)
This course will look at how to recruit effectively and develop healthy
leaders (both student and adult leaders;) in a team environment.
CE243 Teaching Strategies & Methods for
Youth Workers (2)
This course will examine the issues of exegesis, hermeneutics and
application in the context of community. Traditional and non-traditional
pedagogies will be examined and will cover the range of teaching from
aspects of mentoring students (one on one) to large group communication. An
emphasis will be given on placing the “teaching” ministry firmly into the
context of an overall strategy for transformational student ministry.
CE242 Youth Crisis & Intervention (3)
An overview of the principles of crisis intervention for youth workers.
Special attention will be given to the principles for prevention and
intervention along with general counseling and relational skills essential
for a youth worker. Popular youth culture and trends will be also be
examined and responded to

A course covering the history, philosophy, and objectives of Christian
education; a comprehensive approach to programming, curriculum planning,
teacher recruiting and training; and the functions of the various levels C.E.
leadership.

This course covers the broad spectrum of adult training possibilities, with
particular emphasis on assessing needs, developing varied approaches and the
practical principles and techniques for both teaching adults and

Students will select and carry out a research topic related to youth
ministry and present their findings, concluded by an idea proposal (i.e.

GS125 Personal Resource Management (1)
This course is designed to help students manage their personal resources,
including time, money, talents, and spiritual gifts. The objective is to
help students prepare for future training, career development, and church
leadership by discovering and maximizing what God has already deposited in
their lives.
GS220 Introduction to Psychology (3)
This class is an overview of psychological theories, including such topics
as learning, perception, mental health, and the integration of psychology
and theology.
GS225 Science and the Bible (2)
An analysis of the biblical accounts of origins and controversial historical
claims in light of modern scientific findings in various disciplines.
GS234 Interpersonal Development (2)
All ministry flows out of relationships so it is vital that students in
ministry training discover and develop the skills needed to maintain healthy
relationships. This course introduces the concept of boundaries and how they
operate within the context of friendships, marriages and families.
GS261 Visual Arts (2)
The objective of this course is to learn how to develop the three major
ingredients of effective design of any visual art: composition, components,
and concept. How does one create meaningful visual experiences and learning
to communicate visually 'outside the box' will also be explored.
GS421 History of Christianity 1 (3)
The objective this course is to introduce and survey the significant events,
movements and personalities in the church from its beginning to the
Reformation period. By exploring the reforming and renewing works of God in
these events, movements and personalities, the students will gain
perspectives regarding the role of the church in man's history.
GS422 History of Christianity 2 (3)
This course is a continuation of History of Christianity 1. Beginning with
an overview of the Great Reformation this course then follows the path of
history which links the modern evangelical to the church universal. The
final component provides an overview of the twentieth century including the
birth and growth of the Pentecostal and Charismatic expressions of the
church and assesses the state of the church at the beginning of the
twenty-first century.
GS428 Senior Seminar (3)
This is an interactive course that will help the student develop a
comprehensive biblical worldview and philosophy of ministry. The course will
attempt to integrate the studies leading to the senior year and is a
combination of several disciplines including church growth theory, church
administration, and personal development.
GS435 World Philosophies (3)
This is an introductory investigation into the historical and philosophical
foundations of evolving Western worldviews. The purpose of this course is to
understand the roots of contemporary trends of thinking and how the
Christian faith satisfies the human quest for sound reasoning and living.
Comparisons between humanistic and theistic premises will be contrasted that
highlight the limits of reason and the necessity for faith.
GS441 Introduction to Biblical Languages (3)
An introduction to Hebrew and New Testament Greek focusing on alphabets,
basic vocabulary, grammar and syntax with the goal of helping students work
with standard reference tools and develop skills in sound exegesis.

Ministry
Experience (ME)
These are out-of-class
supervised ministry assignments designed to give the student hands-on
experience in a variety of ministries in and through the local church.
Progress is monitored through reports by the student and cooperating church
leaders, and evaluated by assigned faculty. This ministry experience can be
earned each semester, one unit at a time, or combined in a more
comprehensive assignment (i.e. a full-time summer internship).
ME100 Service Ministry (1 )
Any behind the scenes church work, set-up, church building maintenance, etc.
ME101 Servant Leadership (.5)
All IMM students do 45 hours of 'behind the scenes', non-musical service
during their first year. In their preparation to be leaders and musicians,
students are encouraged to develop an attitude and desire to serve God and
others.
ME110 Evangelism (1-2 )
Work with an organized evangelistic outreach.
ME120 MISSIONS: LIFELAUNCH (1-2)
Short-term missions outreach, English as a Second Language Instructor or
some other cross-cultural ministry.
ME130/230 Chapel Worship Team
All full-time IMM students are required to take this course. It is a
non-credit course but a pass or fail will show up on the student's
transcript. This experience includes all the preparation for chapel.
Students will be assigned various roles for each chapel session and will
learn to work as a team to provide opportunity for the student body to
express their worship.
ME141/142/241/242 YMI Youth Ministry Internship (1)
A required component of the 2 & 4 year YMI programs. Every semester YMI
students must volunteer a minimum of 10 hours a week in a supervised youth
ministry environment.

MU100 Worship Arts Seminar (.5)
This one-day seminar usually takes place in the Spring semester and is open
to the whole community. It is an exploration of various subjects pertaining
to worship arts. The 1st year students attend and assist the 2nd year
students in the preparation for the day.
MU101 Music Theory 1 (2)
An introductory course to learn to read notes and rhythm, and understand the
written language of music
MU102 Music Theory 2 (2)
A continuation of learning how to read and write music. This course will
have a contemporary emphasis as students begin to learn about chords and
chord charts. This course ends at an equivalent of grade 1 Royal
Conservatory level. Pre-requisite: MU101 or Equivalent
MU113/114/213/214 Vocal Ensemble 1, 2, 3, 4 (.5)
Vocal Ensemble provides an opportunity for students to use their voices in a
group situation. Students will develop sight reading abilities and will
learn to sing parts while working on pieces to perform on campus and in area
churches.
MU115/116/215/216 Instrumental Ensemble 1, 2, 3, 4
(.5)
These courses give opportunity for students to improve their playing skills
in the context of group interaction. They will learn how to work together
and blend as an instrumental group in a structural environment.
MU217/218 Performance Ensemble (.5)
This ensemble consists of a group of skilled players who work on music to
perform at various functions on and off campus. There will be auditions for
those wanting to be part of this ensemble.
MU117 Music Clinic (.5)
These are one day clinics on a specific topic (ie. Percussion, keyboard,
dance etc). They usually occur during the Fall semester and are different
every year.
MU119/120 Percussion Ensemble (.5)
Students will learn to play a variety of percussion instruments (in
particular, hand drumming eg. Djembe), will work on their rhythm skills and
will play together as an ensemble. They will perform at the recital and
other possible events.
MU121/122/221/222 Sight Singing & Ear Training 1, 2,
3, 4 (1)
These courses will progressively teach the ability to sight read melodies
and rhythm and to transcribe melodies, rhythms, and harmonic progressions.
Classes are designed to maximize student participation and skills
development.
MU131 Vocal Skills (1)
A course for students wanting to develop and strengthen their voice (i.e.
performers, worship leaders, or support singers). Students will learn
breathing techniques, voice projection, pitch control, expressiveness
through drama techniques, and how to sing a variety of styles.
MU132 Music Appreciations (2)
A study of a wide variety of musical styles and artists. The students will
learn about the cultural landscapes that have produced these varied types of
music. The goal is to expand the student's exposure and experience of
musical possibilities, and to develop their capacity to discern what
constitutes “good” music.
MU141 Sound/Audio (2)
This course includes instruction on what good sound is as well as the basics
of setting up a sound system. Students will have comprehensive exposure to
PA setup for live sound applications, setup and operation of all relevant
equipment, and hands-on use of a PA system.
MU142 Sound/Audio Lab (1)
Students will learn how to “mic” voices and various instruments, then train
their ear to recognize what they're hearing, determine what needs to be
changed, and develop the skills to maximize sound quality.
MU150-159 Individual Music Lessons (.5)
Each student will take four semesters of private lessons in their primary
instrument. At the end of each semester there will be a student recital in
which their teacher and the music faculty will mark the student's
performance.
MU163 Worship Trough Dance (1)
Students will learn the power and purpose of dance/movement as a corporate
and individual worship expression. This course is for musicians, artists,
leaders, pastors and anyone interested in learning “why dance?”.
MU165/166 Dance Foundations (.5)
This class will be held in conjunction with the Dance Barn in Langley.
Students may choose to take “Hip Hop” or the “Dance Foundations” class one
evening a week at the Dance Barn Dance Studio.
MU171 Art of Performance (1)
This course will discuss the art of performing publicly. The main focus will
be on singing or playing live music (either in a concert or worship leading
context); the principles taught will also be useful in public speaking,
dance and drama. Students will learn how to deal with “stage fright” and how
to better engage and connect with an audience. Areas explored will include
body/facial language, crafting a set list, creating memorable “moments”,
discovering and nurturing one's own unique style, and finding the right mix
of structure and spontaneity. There will be in-class exercises to practice
the skills discussed.
MU201 Music Theory 3 (2)
A course that builds on Theory 1 and 2, covering alternative scales, more
chord options, chord charting, and cadences. Prerequisite: MU102 or
Equivalent.
MU202 Music Theory 4 (2)
Moving from theory to practice, this course includes chord charting hymns,
analysing and understanding Bach chorales, alternative chords, common
harmonic progressions, transitions, and some jazz elements. Students will
learn to write simple vocal arrangements and transcribe for orchestral
instruments. Pre-requisite: MU201 or Equivalent.
MU223 Song Writing (2)
In this course students will learn about writing melodies, lyrics, hooks,
lead sheets, and basic harmony. The application of their theory knowledge
will enable them to put their creative ideas on paper. In addition, they
will be introduced to music writing software. Pre-requisite: MU102 or
equivalent.
MU224/324 Song Writing Lab (2)
Students will prepare 2 songs to bring to the class. These songs will be
critiqued and helpful suggestions will be made to improve song writing
skills. The class will work together as a team, aiming to inspire and
encourage each other and to help each other refine his or her individual
songs. Towards the end of the semester, each student will have an
opportunity to produce a simple but high-quality demo of one of his or her
songs. Pre-requisite: MU223 or equivalent.
MU231 Music Ministry (2)
This course will cover the various aspects of leading a music ministry in a
church. The topics will include: building a team; working with artists;
organizing regular and special services; developing musicians;
administrative skills; servant leadership; senior pastor and worship leader
relationships. Responsibility before God, personal gifting, creativity, and
working with the given church and its leadership will also be emphasized.
MU237/238 Event Planning 1/2 (1)
In this class students learn how to plan, promote, and organize an event.
They practice what they learn through being responsible for the organization
of the Worship Arts Seminar and other IMM events.
MU243 History & Philosophy of Church Music (2)
A study in the biblical and historical use of music to express worship for
the purpose of developing a balanced philosophy for integrating music and
worship today.
MU244 Worship Leading (2)
The worship leading class will cover issues such as: theology of worship; a
leader's heart and character; team building; various types of musical
worship (i.e. children's, intergenerational, youth, etc.); preparing worship
sets; running rehearsals; creativity etc.
MU249 Worship Leading Lab (2)
This course offers students practical experience in designing and leading
musical worship in a variety of styles and settings through weekly simulated
worship opportunities. The course is intended to be very experiential.
Pre-requisite: MU244.
MU251 Guitar Accompaniment 1 (1)
The fundamental theory of chords, their structure, and relationships are
emphasized, along with simple picking and strumming techniques for the
beginning guitarist.
MU252 Guitar Accompaniment 2 (1)
This more advanced course expands the student's chord vocabulary, including
bar chords and chord inversions, along with more complex strumming and
picking patterns.
MU262 Music Arranging(2)
This course will cover the arranging of songs (i.e. introductions,
transitions, endings), vocals and instrumentation within a worship band
context. The idioms of various musical styles (eg. Jazz, folk, country,
celtic, etc.) and of each instrument will also be demonstrated and
discussed. In addition, students will have opportunity to create their own
arrangements.
MU271 Introduction to Recording (2)
In this course students will learn audio skills needed to record a simple
demo using their own original songs. This will be a hands-on experience.
Pre-requisite: MU141.
MU272 Recording 2 (2)
The course objectives encompass the advancement of audio skills in a
practical recording environment through the production of a series of song
demos of original works written by the participating students.
Pre-requisite: MU271.
MU301/302 Music Theory 5/6 (Advanced) (2)
Both courses are designed for students who desire to go further in their
music writing and arranging. Students will learn to use more jazz chords, to
write contemporary and classical harmonies for piano accompaniment, to write
vocal arrangements, and to write for various instruments, such as strings,
brass, and woodwinds. Analyzing music forms throughout the centuries will
also broaden each student's creative potential.

themes, historical setting and major events, as well as key words, names and
places mentioned in each book.
NT111 Synoptic Gospels (3)
A historical and expository study of the life of Christ as revealed in the
first three Gospels. Particular emphasis is given to the nature and
teachings of Jesus and how they are worked through His disciples then and
now.
NT209 Acts of the Apostles (2)
An examination of the beginning and development of the early church, with an
emphasis on the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the principles for church
life and growth today.
NT308 Romans (3)
An expository study of the book of Romans, with specific consideration given
to Paul's development of major theological themes and their practical
application to life.
NT311 Early Pauline Epistles (3)
This course will provide a foundational overview of some key historical,
cultural, linguistic, philosophical, theological and hermeneutical issues
related to Paul's early Epistles; I and II Thessalonians, Galatians, and I
and II Corinthians. Also, biblical doctrines from the Old Testament and the
Gospels which saturate Paul's doctrine and shape his practice will be
considered.
NT312 Prison Epistles (2)
A general study of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon, focusing
on the doctrinal themes contained in these writings and the outworking of
these truths in the life of the believer.
NT403 Hebrews and General Epistles (3)
A general study of Hebrews, James, First and Second Peter and Jude,
exploring the historical background and major themes, particularly the
Christological themes, and providing principles of interpretation and keys
to application.
NT406 John's Writings (3)
A study of the Apostle John and his Gospel, three epistles and Revelation,
highlighting the unique contribution of these books to understanding the
nature of Jesus and the reflection of His nature through the church.
NT410 Pastoral Epistles (2)
An expository study of First and Second Timothy and Titus, focusing on

An overview of the Old Testament highlighting its organization, overall

OT110 Pentateuch (3)
A study of the first five books of the Old Testament, Genesis through
Deuteronomy, encompassing the early history of mankind and the nation of
Israel, and foreshadowing the person and work of Christ in the Tabernacle

An analytical survey of the historical books of the Old Testament, Joshua
through Esther, emphasizing notable biblical characters, messianic typology,
and timeless spiritual applications gleaned from the experiences of Israel.
OT203 Psalms - The Life of David: Lessons in Character and Leadership (2)
This is a practical course addressing issues that every worship leader
and pastor faces in ministry. Topics covered will include: humility for the
gifted leader, the emotional ups and downs of ministry, placing God above
position, possessions, and power; dealing with envy; serving the leader God
places over you; raising up other leaders; the complementary ministries of
worship, spiritual warfare and compassion; the risk-taking component of
walking by faith; moral purity; freedom in worship expression; dealing with
all kinds of people problems; hearing God's voice and generosity in giving.
OT303 Poetical Books (3)
A thematic and devotional exposition of the Old Testament poetical books,
Job through Song of Solomon, with emphasis given to practical application.
OT304 Hebrew Prophets (3)
A thematic survey of the prophetic literature of the Old Testament, an
analysis of the function of the prophet in ancient Israel, and an exposition
of specific passages that have messianic or eschatological significance.

PS313 Leadership Development 1 (2)
This course is designed to help students gain a lifetime perspective and an
understanding of the phases of leadership development. Attention will be
given to a number of relevant elements including a theology of leadership,
barriers and hindrances to growth and usefulness, understanding God's
guidance, skills, talents and gifts as well as understanding leadership
styles.
PS317 Pastoral Ministry (3)
This course is designed to lay a solid theological foundation concerning
pastoral ministry, it's theology, philosophy and accompanying components. It
is hoped that the student will be able to penetrate the surface issues of
pastoral ministry and understand the heart of God concerning this great
calling.
PS326 Christian Counseling (3)
An introductory course in Christian counseling. The course will emphasize
the areas of counseling as it relates to pastoral ministry. A brief overview
will be given of specific situations that pastors will most commonly
encounter.
PS330 Skilled Helper (2)
This course is designed to provide the student with interpersonal helping
skills. A Christian approach to interpersonal helping will be developed
using the principles found in Gerard Egan's Skilled Helper.
PS341 Church Planting 1 (2)
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic issues and
foundational ideas regarding planting churches, particularly in a Canadian
setting. It is hoped that those that take this course, even if they don't
presently see themselves as church planters, will begin to have a sense of a
church planting vision, understand that there are a variety of ways to be
involved in this enterprise and begin to gain a church planting mentality.
PS413 Leadership Development 2 (2)
This course focuses on the dynamics of leaders building leaders. Attention
will be given to understanding leadership practices, strategies and methods
for developing leaders in the local church setting, and the benefits and
challenges of developing and working in leadership teams.
PS427 Marriage and Family Counseling (3)
This course lays a theological foundation for marriage and family. Attention
will be given to the components of a healthy marriage and family and thereby
give the student a basis from which to counsel others in marriage and family
relationships.
PS429 Church Leadership and Administration (3)
A study of basic administrative management and leadership principles,
including goal-setting, planning, decision-making, organization, and human
resource management. This course will also include components on general
church polity and financial management.
PS432 Foursquare Distinctives (2)
This course examines the history, doctrine and polity of the Foursquare
Gospel Church of Canada. Emphasis will be given to the unique
characteristics of this “interdenominational” denomination and its place in
relation to the present global picture.
PS441 Church Planting 2 (2)
This course is a continuation of Church Planting 1 focusing on the elements
of church planting that promote the establishing of healthy and sustainable
ministries. These include a biblical foundation, leading with purpose,
effective planning, nurturing leaders through mentoring, cross-cultural
dynamics, producing what is reproducible, and long-term thinking.

PT101 Spiritual Formation 1 (2)
This course invites students into a dynamic process of forming their spirit
and transforming their mind. This happens by truly loving God, and both
hearing and doing what God asks concerning understanding life's purpose,
maintaining integrity, overcoming sin, and practicing spiritual disciplines.
PT102 Spiritual Formation 2 (2)
Spiritual Formation 1 was about loving God. Spiritual Formation 2 is about
God's love being expressed to others. This course focuses on healthier
relationships, communicating warmth and acceptance, listening with care and
insight, helping others without getting anxious or overly involved, showing
others they have true value and worth, gaining a biblical foundation for
purity in relationships with the opposite sex, and removal of obstructions
to personal and relational growth.
PT105 Bible Research (2)
This course is an introduction to the basic tools and methods for
understanding and using the basic principles needed to read interpret the
Bible. This course is prerequisite to Hermeneutics.
PT122 Personal Evangelism (2)
This course is designed to prepare and involve the student in personal
evangelism, the most basic ministry of winning and discipling new believers.
PT225 World Religions (2)
An analysis of major world religions, comparing and contrasting their tenets
with the fundamental doctrines of Christianity. The course also includes
practical principles for reaching and teaching adherents of other religions.
PT226 Comparative Cults (2)
A comparative analysis of cults and aberrant Christian sects, contrasting
their tenets with the fundamental doctrines of Christianity. Practical
principles of identifying errant teachings and ministering to those bound by
such will also be presented.
PT230 Introduction to Hermeneutics (3)
This course presents specific principles, methodical guidelines, and skills
training for in-depth study and interpretation of the Bible. Bible Research
is prerequisite to this course.
PT232 Hermeneutics 2 (3)
This course examines the task of Bible interpretation paying specific
attention to the variety of literary genres present. The student will be
familiarized with the unique characteristics important for interpreting and
applying the Scriptural truth present in the different sections of the
Bible. Attention will also be given to the work of moving from
interpretation to presentation of Scripture.

PT324 Perspectives on World Missions (3)
A course designed to acquaint the students with the Scriptural basis of
missions (Missiology), the history of missions, a current global view of
missions in general, and an inside look at Foursquare missions in
particular.
PT340 Introduction to Exegesis (3)
The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the art and
science of exegesis and the necessary relationship of exegesis to Bible
study, sermon preparation and the writing of exegetical papers. Students
will receive a theoretical understanding of how to approach exegesis, tools
and techniques to use in exegesis and opportunity to practice the art of
doing exegesis in different literary genres.

sets the foundation for surveying the set of Christian beliefs that are the

A doctrinal study and practical application of the person and work of the
Holy Spirit (Pneumatology) designed to establish a theological base and to
challenge the student to walk and minister in the dynamic of the
Spirit-filled life.

This course is a study of the nature and authority of Scripture (Bibliology)
and the nature of the person and work of God as revealed in the Scripture
(Theology Proper).
TH211 Systematic Theology 2 (3)
This course continues a systematic study of doctrines, helping the student
understand a biblical view of humanity (Anthropology), sin (Hamartiology),
the person and work of Jesus (Christology) and salvation (Soteriology).
TH214 Concepts of the Church (2)
A look at the formation, structure, leadership and mission of the Church
(Ecclesiology) from the basis of Scripture, identifying and stripping away
non-biblical traditions and concepts of man.
TH220 Theology of Spiritual Warfare (2)
This is a biblical study of the world that lies beyond the physical senses
including angelology and demonology. Special attention is given to the
believer's involvement in the spiritual realm especially as it pertains to
godly living and prayer.
TH310 Christology (2)
This course investigates contemporary views of Jesus, discovers their
origins, evaluates them and attempts to develop a thoughtful response
remaining faithful to Scriptural revelation.
TH414 Eschatology (2)
Biblical teaching regarding last things: the second coming of Christ and the
consummation of the age; positions on the Rapture, Tribulation and Millenium;
resurrections and judgments; and the final state of both the saved and the
unsaved.
TH430 Theological Method (2)
This course is designed to teach students to take a methodical approach to
answering life's questions. Student will learn to draw on history, biblical
theology, systematic theology, apologetics and practical theology to respond
to questions in a holistic rather than a fragmented manner.
