Gateway Missionary Training Centre and Pacific Life Bible College have agreed to partner together and create two new programs to better serve their students.
Gateway has created a one-year Certificate of Bible and Missions, which includes one semester or modular courses in Bible and theology provided by PLBC, a second semester of missiological studies at Gateway, and a three-month cross-cultural internship experience.
Pacific Life has added a specialty of World Missions to their four-year B.A. degree in Pastoral leadership, which includes seven semesters of Bible, theology, ministry and general studies at PLBC, a semester of missiological studies at Gateway, and a three-month cross-cultural internship experience.
The collaborative components of these two programs will involve an exchange of participating students and faculty, a sharing of student application information, the honouring of respective tuition and fees, co-operative housing arrangements, a common internship experience, the transfer of credits, and a partnership in certification.
Collaborative Components
1. Student Exchange Gateway students will enroll in Bible, theology, and other courses of interest offered through PLBC, either on the PLBC campus, on the Gateway campus, or through distance education. The one-year Certificate of Bible and Missions requires the completion of 16 credits of PLBC studies or equivalent transfers.
PLBC students will enroll in the missions modules offered through Gateway on the Gateway campus. The B.A. in Pastoral Leadership with a major in World Missions requires the completion of one full semester of Gateway’s missiological courses (equivalent of 16 credits), along with the three-month cross-cultural internship monitored by Gateway.
2. Faculty and Course Exchange Special arrangements have been made by PLBC faculty to provide the courses needed by Gateway students, even when they are not offered through the regular campus schedule at PLBC. Extra weekly classes will be added to the afternoon schedule at PLBC on Gateway’s commute days or modular courses will be provided after the spring semester, providing a minimum of 5 students are registered per course. Distance education courses or directed studies will be made available to Gateway students when there are less than 5 students enrolled. PLBC students will be given priority at Gateway within the reality of space limitations. Because on-site residency is an essential component of the Gateway experience, the size of the student body is currently restricted to 15 – 20.
3. Student Applications Students enrolling in the Gateway Certificate of Bible and Missions program will apply using Gateway application forms. Students enrolling in PLBC’s B.A. missions program will apply using both PLBC and Gateway application forms. Common information, such as references, medical history, etc., will be shared. Students will be asked to sign a waiver allowing for the copying and exchanging of student files between the two institutions.
4. Student Tuition and Fees Students will pay the tuition and fees due to PLBC and Gateway directly with each institution.
PLBC will waive all student fees, with the exception of tuition and library fees, for Gateway students. Gateway students may choose to pay a prorated library fee to access PLBC’s library while they are studying on campus. If Gateway students wish to attend the annual fall retreat or other PLBC student activities they will be given the option of paying the flat-rate student activity fee or for each event on an individual basis.
5. Housing Arrangements Gateway students attending semester classes at PLBC will live at Gateway and commute each week. If attending modular classes offered at PLBC after their spring semester, Gateway students can choose to live on campus at PLBC or live at Gateway and commute together for classes. Rates specific to each institution will apply.
PLBC students attending Gateway, however, will be expected to live at the Gateway campus. The life skills component of the Gateway experience, such as team-building, conflict resolution, and cross-cultural adaptation, are enhanced in this small group environment. The relationships forged with the other missions candidates will carry through their internship experience to the debriefing that follows.
6. Internship Experience Both Gateway and PLBC students are required to complete the three-month (or more) cross-cultural internship. Each student can research their own internship opportunity through their church organization or missions agency. Gateway will make the arrangements for the internship, monitor the practicum assignments, and conduct the final debriefing of the experience.
7. Transfer of Credits PLBC and Gateway students will earn academic credits for the courses they take from PLBC. They can also pay a metriculation fee of $100.00 and receive 16 credits for a completed semester at Gateway and another 3 practicum credits for the completed internship component. Gateway will provide a copy of the student evaluation for their semester of studies and internship to be kept in the student’s file at PLBC. Students can build on their studies and experience by continuing to earn PLBC credits on the field through distance education courses.
8. Certification Gateway students completing 16 credits through PLBC, the missiological training at Gateway, and the three-month internship will receive a Certificate of Bible and Missions from Gateway and Pacific Life Bible College. They could also continue their studies with PLBC and work toward the two-year Associate of Theology or four-year B.A. in Pastoral Leadership from PLBC.
PLBC students completing seven semesters (109 credits) through PLBC, the missiological training at Gateway (16 credits), and the three-month internship (3 credits) will receive a B.A. in Pastoral Leadership with a major in World Missions from PLBC. While the internship component may not be completed in time for the spring graduation ceremonies, students who complete the academic component may participate in the ceremonies. They will receive their official diploma upon successful completion of the internship.
In the spirit of Christian unity and for the effectiveness of working together to fulfil the Great Commission, the directors of Gateway Missions Training Centre and Pacific Life Bible College will continue to uphold these points of agreement and others that arise as this partnership continues.
